Overview

The Audit Partner signs the opinion. Everything else — the portfolio, the team, the fees, the firm-level roles — follows from that single accountability, because the signature carries personal and regulatory consequence in a way no other finance role does.

Practically the job is three jobs held simultaneously. It is a technical role, resolving the matters nobody below could conclude. It is a business, with a book to grow, price and defend against firms doing the same to you. And it is an ownership role: partners contribute capital, share profits, and carry collective responsibility for the firm's quality record and its regulatory standing with ACRA.

In Singapore the regulatory frame is specific. Signing statutory audits requires Public Accountant registration; listed-entity engagements carry partner rotation requirements; and the Practice Monitoring Programme reviews individual partners, not just firms. Partners who treat quality as an administrative burden rather than a personal exposure tend to discover the difference the hard way.

Where this sits: the final step of the practice ladder, reached from Senior Audit Manager or Audit Director. Partners who move to industry generally go to Head of Finance or CFO seats, or to board and audit-committee roles. The full ladder is in the Audit pathway.

Responsibilities

  • Take engagement partner responsibility for statutory audits, including the audit opinion and the associated personal liability.
  • Conclude on the most significant judgements and key audit matters, and defend them to audit committees and regulators.
  • Own and grow a book of business: pricing, tendering, client retention and cross-service development.
  • Set and enforce audit quality standards across engagements, and remediate findings from inspections.
  • Manage partner rotation and independence requirements for listed and regulated clients.
  • Lead a section of the practice, including partner and director succession, headcount and profitability.
  • Contribute to firm governance — admissions, risk decisions, capital and strategy.
  • Represent the firm with regulators, ISCA, professional bodies and the wider market.

  • A demonstrable book of business, or a credible plan and pipeline to build one within the first two years.
  • An unblemished quality record — inspection findings weigh heavily in admission decisions.
  • Capital contribution capacity, since equity partnership requires a personal investment in the firm.

required continuing development for registered practitioners.

Interview tips

  • Lead with the book. Fees held, growth rate, client concentration and how much is personally originated.
  • Present your quality record. Inspection outcomes and remediation, stated plainly, are the first thing a firm checks.
  • Explain your sector case. Lateral partner hires in Singapore are made on market access, not general capability.
  • Be precise on portability. Which relationships would realistically follow, and what restrictions apply.
  • Interrogate the economics. Profit-sharing basis, capital contribution, drawings and exit terms differ sharply between firms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Audit Partner earn in Singapore?

New partners typically earn a S$25,000 to S$35,000 monthly equivalent, established partners S$33,000 to S$50,000, and senior partners with large books considerably more. Earnings are profit-linked rather than salaried, so they vary with firm performance.

What is required to become an Audit Partner in Singapore?

Public Accountant registration with ACRA is mandatory to sign statutory audits, which requires the CA (Singapore) qualification or an approved equivalent plus prescribed practical experience. Admission also depends on a book of business, a clean quality record and capital contribution.

Do Audit Partners have personal liability?

Yes. The engagement partner takes personal responsibility for the audit opinion and is subject to individual review under the Practice Monitoring Programme, alongside the firm's collective regulatory and professional obligations.

What are partner rotation rules in Singapore?

Listed-entity audits are subject to engagement partner rotation requirements designed to preserve independence, with a cooling-off period before returning to the same client. Firms manage this centrally as part of independence monitoring.

Can an Audit Partner move to industry?

Yes, most commonly into Head of Finance or CFO roles at listed groups that value regulatory credibility and audit committee fluency. Board and audit committee appointments are the other common route after practice.
