Overview

The Head of FP&A owns the story the business tells itself about its own future. Budget, forecast, long-range plan and the performance narrative to the board all sit in one function, and the credibility of that function rests on whether its numbers have been right before.

The job is less analytical than most people expect. Models are built by the team; the Head's contribution is deciding what the business should be planning towards, which assumptions are being allowed to survive unchallenged, and how to present a deteriorating outlook to a board that would prefer not to hear it.

In Singapore the seat exists in two shapes. In a regional headquarters it is the senior planning voice for Asia-Pacific, reporting into a regional CFO and negotiating constantly with a group function elsewhere. In a listed or PE-backed local group it is closer to the capital markets story, with guidance, covenants and investor expectations attached to the plan.

Where this sits: the top of the FP&A ladder, reached from FP&A Manager or Commercial Finance Manager. The natural onward moves are Finance Director and CFO, and the common lateral is Financial Controller or Head of Finance for candidates who need control depth before a CFO appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the entire planning architecture: annual budget, quarterly reforecasts, monthly performance review and the multi-year strategic plan.
  • Set the assumption framework the business plans against — market growth, pricing, cost inflation, headcount and foreign exchange.
  • Present performance, outlook and risk to the board, the regional CFO or the group function, with a single defensible view.
  • Lead a team of managers and analysts, including structure, hiring, succession and capability development.
  • Own forecast credibility as a metric, and intervene where submitters are systematically optimistic.
  • Provide the financial evidence base for strategic decisions: market entry, portfolio changes, restructuring and major investment.
  • Sponsor the planning technology roadmap and the data foundation beneath it.
  • Partner with controllership, treasury and tax so the plan reflects cash, funding and effective tax reality rather than accounting profit alone.

Skills required

  • Planning architecture design
  • Board-level communication
  • Strategic and long-range planning
  • Assumption framework setting
  • Team leadership at manager level
  • Forecast credibility management
  • Capital allocation input
  • Scenario and downside planning
  • Planning system sponsorship
  • Cross-functional negotiation
  • Investor or group reporting awareness
  • Cash and funding literacy
  • Succession and capability building
  • Judgement under uncertainty

Qualifications

  • Twelve or more years of finance experience, including several years leading a planning function or a substantial regional FP&A team.
  • A professional qualification is effectively expected: CA (Singapore), ACCA, CIMA or CFA.
  • Proven experience presenting to a board, an audit committee or a group leadership team, not merely preparing the material for someone else.
  • Regional or multi-market scope is standard for Singapore-based roles, which typically cover Asia-Pacific or Southeast Asia.
  • Exposure to a transaction, restructuring, funding round or listing is a strong differentiator for the onward CFO route.
  • Evidence of building a team, not just running one — succession is a question boards ask about the function itself.

Bands show progression within this role, not overall career entry.

Career progression

  1. Head of FP&A

own the plan, the narrative and the credibility of both.

  2. Financial Controller or Head of Finance

add statutory control, audit and compliance depth if the CFO seat is the target.

  3. Finance Director

combine planning ownership with full functional leadership for a market or business unit.

  4. CFO

take responsibility for control, cash, funding, governance and the external story.

  5. Group CFO or board role

scope extends across entities, capital structure and investor relations.

Recommended certifications

  • CA (Singapore)

the strongest local credential and close to expected for a subsequent CFO appointment.

  • CIMA (Strategic Level) or CGMA

the deepest professional fit for planning and performance leadership.

  • CFA

valuable in listed, PE-backed or investor-facing environments where the plan supports guidance.

  • SID Director Financial Reporting Essentials

useful governance grounding for board-facing roles in Singapore.

  • Executive leadership programmes

the transition from managing analysts to leading managers is the practical constraint at this level.

Interview tips

  • Lead with a call you made. Boards hire heads of FP&A for judgement; describe a forecast position you held against pressure and how it resolved.
  • Explain your planning architecture. Cycle, cadence, assumption ownership and how top-down targets meet bottom-up submissions.
  • Bring a forecast accuracy record. Quantified credibility is the most persuasive evidence available in this interview.
  • Describe the team you built. Structure, hires, promotions and who succeeded you — succession is assessed at this level.
  • Ask how the plan connects to capital. If planning does not influence investment or incentives, the role is reporting with a large team attached.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Head of FP&A do in Singapore?

A Head of FP&A owns the full planning architecture — budget, reforecasts, monthly performance review and the long-range plan — sets the assumption framework, leads a team of managers and analysts, and presents performance, outlook and risk to the board or regional CFO with a single defensible view.

How much does a Head of FP&A earn in Singapore?

Typical monthly ranges are S$16,000 to S$20,000 for a first head-of-function seat, S$19,000 to S$25,000 for Asia-Pacific or Southeast Asia scope, and S$24,000 to S$32,000 at group level in listed or large regional groups. Long-term incentives form a meaningful part of the package at the top of the range.

Is Head of FP&A a route to CFO?

It is one of the two main routes, alongside controllership. The advantage is commercial credibility and board exposure; the usual gap is statutory control, audit, tax and treasury depth. Many candidates close it deliberately with a Financial Controller or Head of Finance seat before a CFO appointment.

What is the difference between Head of FP&A and Finance Director?

Head of FP&A owns planning and performance across the business but usually not the ledger. A Finance Director owns the whole finance function for a market or business unit, including control, reporting and compliance. Head of FP&A is deeper in planning; Finance Director is broader in accountability.

How is a Head of FP&A actually measured?

Primarily on forecast credibility and decision influence: whether leadership trusts the outlook, whether the plan is delivered on time and whether it changes what the business does. Model sophistication is not the measure. A track record of accurate, early warnings is worth more than any technical capability.
