Overview

Financial Planning & Analysis is where finance stops describing the past and starts shaping the next decision. An FP&A Analyst builds the budget, maintains the forecast, explains why performance diverged from plan, and models the options in front of the business.

The mindset is different from accounting. Accuracy still matters, but timeliness and relevance matter more: a directionally correct model delivered before a decision beats a perfect analysis delivered after it.

Singapore is a strong FP&A market because so many multinationals run regional headquarters here. Analysts frequently cover several markets, which builds commercial breadth fast, and often work alongside a shared service centre that owns the transactional close.

Where this sits: analysts commonly arrive from Finance Executive, Senior Finance Executive or audit. Progression runs to Senior FP&A Analyst and FP&A Manager, and from there to Head of Finance. If you prefer control and reporting depth instead, Financial Controller is the parallel track.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the annual budget and the rolling forecast models for the entities or markets in scope.
  • Produce monthly performance reporting with variance analysis against budget, forecast and prior year.
  • Explain revenue, margin and cost movements in commercial language for non-finance stakeholders.
  • Model business cases: pricing changes, headcount plans, new products, market entry and capital expenditure.
  • Track and interpret KPIs, unit economics and cost drivers across business units.
  • Partner with commercial, marketing and operations teams as their finance point of contact.
  • Prepare management and regional reporting packs, including board-level summaries.
  • Improve planning tools and processes, moving recurring analysis out of manual spreadsheets.
  • Support cash flow forecasting and scenario planning under changing assumptions.

Skills required

  • Financial modelling
  • Budgeting and rolling forecasts
  • Variance and driver analysis
  • Scenario and sensitivity analysis
  • Business case evaluation
  • Unit economics and KPI design
  • Advanced Excel and Power Query
  • Power BI or Tableau
  • SQL for finance datasets
  • Anaplan, Adaptive or TM1
  • Commercial storytelling
  • Stakeholder partnering
  • Presentation to leadership
  • Accounting fundamentals

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Accountancy, Finance, Economics or a quantitative discipline is the usual academic requirement.
  • Two to six years of experience, with a strong preference for candidates who understand how the numbers were produced before analysing them.
  • Professional qualification is helpful but less decisive here than in reporting roles; CFA and ACCA are both well received.
  • Demonstrable modelling capability is tested directly, and a portfolio example carries more weight than a described one.
  • Regional exposure across Southeast Asian markets is a strong advantage in multinational hiring.

Recommended certifications

  • CFA

the strongest signal of analytical and valuation depth for commercial finance roles.

  • ACCA or CA (Singapore)

valuable grounding, especially for analysts who did not come through an accounting seat.

  • Financial modelling certification

such as FMVA — practical and directly assessed in FP&A interviews.

  • Power BI or Tableau certification

self-service reporting is now an expectation rather than a bonus.

  • SQL fundamentals

the difference between waiting for data and answering the question yourself.

Interview tips

  • Expect a modelling test. Most Singapore FP&A processes include a case or an Excel exercise under time pressure.
  • Lead with a decision you influenced. Name the analysis, the recommendation and what the business did differently.
  • Explain a variance in plain English. If your explanation needs accounting vocabulary, it is not ready for a commercial audience.
  • Know your drivers. Volume, price, mix and cost — be able to bridge a result using them without notes.
  • Ask who owns the close. If FP&A is also doing the accounting, the analytical work in the role will be smaller than advertised.

Frequently asked questions

What does an FP&A Analyst do in Singapore?

An FP&A Analyst builds budgets and forecasts, analyses variances against plan, models business cases, tracks KPIs and partners with commercial teams. The focus is forward-looking decision support rather than statutory reporting.

How much does an FP&A Analyst earn in Singapore?

Monthly base pay generally runs from about S$4,500 for single-market support to around S$10,000 for senior analysts partnering leadership across the region. Multinational regional headquarters typically pay at the upper end.

Do I need accounting experience to move into FP&A?

It is not mandatory, but it helps considerably. Analysts who understand how a number was produced ask better questions and are trusted faster than those who only consume the output.

Is FP&A better paid than accounting roles?

At comparable experience levels, commercial FP&A roles in multinationals often pay a modest premium over equivalent reporting roles. The larger difference appears later, because FP&A backgrounds are common among finance leaders.

CFA or ACCA for an FP&A career?

CFA aligns better with valuation, investment and analytical work. ACCA aligns better if you may return to controllership. Candidates already in accounting frequently finish ACCA first, then move commercially.
