FP&A / Commercial Finance

Overview
The FP&A Manager owns the planning process rather than any single model. Budget, reforecast, monthly review and the long-range plan become a calendar you are accountable for, and the measure of success shifts from the quality of your own analysis to whether the cycle produces reliable decisions on time.
Most people arriving in this seat underestimate how much of it is coordination. Country controllers submit late, commercial teams sandbag, and the deadline is fixed by a group timetable set overseas. The manager who succeeds builds a process that absorbs that friction rather than one that assumes it away.
The second change is people. You now review rather than build, and your throughput is limited by how quickly your analysts improve. Managers who keep the interesting models for themselves cap their team and, eventually, themselves.
In Singapore this role most often sits in a regional headquarters consolidating Southeast Asian markets, reporting to a Head of FP&A or directly to a regional finance director.
Where this sits: the central-finance step above Senior FP&A Analyst, parallel to Finance Business Partner and Commercial Finance Manager. The next step is Head of FP&A, with Financial Controller as a well-trodden lateral for those who want control as well as planning.
Responsibilities
- Own the planning calendar: annual budget, quarterly reforecasts, monthly review cycle and the long-range plan.
- Set submission standards, templates and assumption guidance, then enforce them across markets and functions.
- Consolidate the group or regional plan and reconcile bottom-up submissions to top-down targets.
- Lead a team of two to six analysts, including workload allocation, review, coaching and performance conversations.
- Present performance, outlook and risk to regional leadership, with a defensible view rather than a menu of scenarios.
- Own the planning toolchain — Excel architecture or a dedicated system — and drive its adoption.
- Partner with the controllership team so management and statutory numbers reconcile without ad hoc bridging.
- Track forecast accuracy across submitters and address systematic optimism where it recurs.

Qualifications
- Seven to twelve years of finance experience, including at least three inside a full planning cycle and some formal review responsibility.
- A professional qualification is close to standard at this level in Singapore: CA (Singapore), ACCA, CIMA or CFA.
- Prior line-management or structured review experience — employers ask specifically, and unmanaged analysts are a common gap.
- Regional consolidation experience is strongly preferred, since most Singapore seats cover multiple Southeast Asian entities.
- Hands-on exposure to a planning system such as Anaplan, Workday Adaptive, SAP Analytics Cloud or Oracle EPM.
- A track record of improving a process, not merely running one, is what separates manager candidates from senior analysts.

Leadership or first-line management training

Interview tips
- Describe your calendar, not your model. At manager level the process is the deliverable; walk through a full cycle with dates and dependencies.
- Bring a process you fixed. Late submissions, unreliable inputs, a bloated pack — name the problem, the change and the measurable result.
- Talk about your team honestly. How you allocated work, what you delegated reluctantly, and who you developed.
- Show a forecast accuracy metric. Managers who measure their own bias are rare and immediately credible.
- Ask who owns the number. If the business does not own its own forecast, the role is administration of a process nobody believes in.
Frequently asked questions
What does an FP&A Manager do in Singapore?
An FP&A Manager owns the planning calendar — budget, reforecasts, monthly review and the long-range plan — sets submission standards across markets, consolidates the regional plan, leads a small analyst team and presents performance and outlook to regional leadership. The deliverable is a reliable process, not a single model.
How much does an FP&A Manager earn in Singapore?
Typical monthly ranges are S$9,500 to S$12,500 for single-country scope with a small team, S$12,000 to S$15,500 for regional consolidation and planning-system ownership, and S$15,000 to S$18,000 at group scope. Listed and PE-backed businesses generally pay a larger bonus component.
How do I move from Senior FP&A Analyst to FP&A Manager?
Take responsibility for part of the process, not just part of the model. Run the submission timetable, set the template standard, review a junior analyst's work formally, and own a section of the leadership presentation. Employers promote on demonstrated process ownership and review capability far more than on modelling depth.
Is FP&A Manager more senior than Finance Business Partner?
They usually sit in the same band in Singapore. FP&A Manager carries process ownership and a team; business partnering carries commercial accountability and influence within a unit. Compensation is comparable, and moves between the two are common in both directions.
Do FP&A Managers need controllership experience?
Not to do the role, but it helps considerably. Managers who understand how the ledger produces the actuals reconcile management and statutory reporting far more cleanly, and it is close to essential if the longer-term ambition is Finance Director or CFO rather than Head of FP&A.
