Step 3 of 7
FP&A / Commercial Finance

Overview
The Senior FP&A Analyst is the first role in commercial finance where the numbers are genuinely yours. You are no longer submitting a forecast for someone else to defend — you defend it, and you are asked why last quarter's version was wrong.
That shift changes the daily work more than the title suggests. A large share of the week goes on reviewing other people's inputs, deciding which assumptions to challenge and which to accept, and translating a spreadsheet into three sentences a commercial director will act on. Technical modelling is assumed at this point; judgement is what is being assessed.
In Singapore this seat sits mostly in regional headquarters, where the analyst consolidates several country submissions, and in private-equity backed or high-growth businesses, where the forecast is under weekly scrutiny because cash depends on it. The regional version teaches process and diplomacy; the growth-company version teaches speed and comfort with incomplete data.
Where this sits: the step up from FP&A Analyst, and the last individual-contributor seat before the path forks. One branch leads to Finance Business Partner, the other to FP&A Manager. The full ladder is set out in the FP&A / Commercial Finance pathway.
Responsibilities
- Own the consolidated forecast model, including the driver logic, scenario switches and version control.
- Run the quarterly reforecast cycle end to end: timetable, submission templates, challenge sessions and final consolidation.
- Review junior analysts' packs and models before they leave finance, and coach on structure rather than correcting silently.
- Present variance and outlook to functional heads, answering for the assumptions rather than merely reporting them.
- Lead the analytical workstream of the annual budget, including the top-down target reconciliation to bottom-up submissions.
- Build the business cases behind pricing changes, new customer terms, headcount requests and capital spend.
- Track forecast accuracy over time and diagnose systematic bias in the submissions you receive.
- Improve the toolchain — automate recurring extracts, retire duplicated spreadsheets, standardise the pack.
Skills required
- Driver-based forecast modelling
- Scenario and sensitivity analysis
- Consolidation across entities
- Forecast accuracy tracking
- Business case construction
- Review of junior work
- Stakeholder challenge
- Executive-level commentary
- Power Query and Power BI
- SQL for self-service data
- Planning tools such as Anaplan or Adaptive
- Assumption governance
- Prioritisation under close deadlines
- Coaching without taking over
Qualifications
- Four to seven years of relevant experience is the usual band, with at least two spent inside a genuine planning cycle rather than pure reporting.
- A degree in Accountancy, Finance, Economics or a quantitative field, commonly paired with a professional qualification in progress or complete.
- CA (Singapore), ACCA, CIMA or CFA are all well represented; CIMA and CFA carry slightly more weight in commercially oriented teams.
- Demonstrable ownership of a model that other people relied on — this is the single strongest credential at this level.
- Regional exposure, even limited, is valued highly in Singapore because most seats here consolidate more than one market.
- Experience with a dedicated planning system is a differentiator as businesses move off Excel-only forecasting.
Salary expectations
Early in role (3–5 years)
S$6,500 – S$8,000
First seat with full model ownership, typically single-country scope.

Bands show progression within this role, not overall career entry.
Career progression
own the model and the assumptions, and be the person who answers for the forecast.
move out of central finance and into a business unit, trading breadth for commercial proximity.

take profit-and-loss accountability for a product, channel or market.
own the whole planning cycle and the commercial narrative to the board.
Recommended certifications
CIMA (Strategic Level)
the closest professional fit for planning, decision support and performance management.
CFA Level II
signals analytical depth, particularly useful in investor-facing or PE-backed businesses.
CA (Singapore) or ACCA
still the default credential if you intend to keep the controller route open.
Anaplan Model Builder or Workday Adaptive certification
direct, practical, and increasingly requested in regional job specifications.
Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300)
makes the reporting layer self-service and frees the week for analysis.
Interview tips
- Bring a forecast you got wrong. Explaining a miss, its cause and the correction is the strongest answer available at this level.
- Describe your model's architecture. Interviewers listen for input, calculation and output separation, and for how you handle version control.
- Show a challenge conversation. Give an example of pushing back on a commercial assumption and how you kept the relationship intact.
- Quantify your scope precisely. Entities, revenue, cost base, number of submissions consolidated — vagueness reads as inherited work.
- Ask how the plan is used. If the forecast does not drive decisions or incentives, the role is reporting with a better title.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an FP&A Analyst and a Senior FP&A Analyst in Singapore?
Ownership and review. An FP&A Analyst contributes to the planning cycle; a Senior FP&A Analyst owns the model, defends the assumptions to functional heads and reviews the work of junior analysts before it leaves finance. The technical skills overlap heavily — the accountability does not.
How much does a Senior FP&A Analyst earn in Singapore?
Typical monthly ranges run S$6,500 to S$8,000 for first-time model owners, S$7,500 to S$9,500 with regional consolidation and review duties, and S$9,000 to S$11,500 for complex group scope. Private-equity backed and technology businesses tend to sit at the upper end with a larger variable component.
Should I move to business partnering or FP&A management next?
Business partnering suits people energised by commercial proximity and comfortable being the only finance voice in a room. FP&A management suits people who prefer process ownership, team building and central visibility. Neither closes the other off, but partnering builds a commercial CV faster while management builds a leadership one.
Do I need a planning system like Anaplan to progress?
Not to get the role, but increasingly to compete for the best ones. Singapore regional headquarters are steadily moving off Excel-only forecasting, and specifications now name Anaplan, Workday Adaptive or SAP Analytics Cloud. Exposure to any one of them transfers reasonably well to the others.
How do employers judge readiness for Senior FP&A Analyst?
Three signals: a model that others depended on and you maintained through a full cycle, evidence of challenging a business assumption successfully, and commentary that senior stakeholders read without translation. Years of experience matter far less than whether the forecast was genuinely yours.
