Overview

The Senior Internal Auditor is the in-charge of an audit. You plan it against the risk assessment, brief and supervise the team, run the opening and closing meetings, and own the report that goes forward to the Audit Committee pack. Where the Internal Auditor is accountable for a process area, the Senior is accountable for a conclusion about a business.

The hardest part of the seat is rarely technical. It is holding a defensible position with a senior process owner who disagrees with a rating, while keeping the relationship intact for the next cycle. Functions in Singapore judge Seniors largely on whether their findings land — accepted, remediated and closed — rather than on how many were raised.

Regional scope is common at this level: leading fieldwork across Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam or China entities from a Singapore base, often with local teams whose control maturity varies widely. That variation is what makes the seat a credible preparation for management.

Where this sits: the third rung of the Internal Audit & Risk pathway, between Internal Auditor and Internal Audit Manager. The equivalent practice-side seat is Audit Assistant Manager, and the common finance-side exit is Assistant Finance Manager in the Accounting pathway.

  • Supervise and review the work of executives and auditors, and coach on evidence and writing standards.

  • Own the audit report: findings, ratings, overall conclusion and the agreed management action plan.
  • Lead regional fieldwork across Southeast Asia entities, adapting the approach to local control maturity.
  • Design analytics routines that can be reused across entities and audit cycles.
  • Support investigations and whistleblowing follow-up where independence and discretion are required.
  • Contribute materially to the annual risk assessment and to Audit Committee reporting material.

Career progression

  1. Senior Internal Auditor

lead audits, own reports and hold ratings with senior process owners.

  2. Internal Audit Manager

own the annual plan, the team and the Audit Committee relationship.

  3. Risk Manager

move from assurance over controls to ownership of the enterprise risk framework.

  4. Assistant Finance Manager

the controllership exit for those who prefer to run finance rather than review it.

Recommended certifications

  • CIA (Certified Internal Auditor)

effectively expected at this level in Singapore for career internal auditors.

  • CA (Singapore)

the credential that keeps a controllership exit genuinely available.

  • CISA

the standard addition where audits cover systems, access and change management.

  • CRMA or FRM

the natural preparation if the intended next move is into risk management.

  • CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner)

relevant where investigations form a recurring part of the plan.

Interview tips

  • Lead with an audit you owned. Scope, team, conclusion and what management actually changed afterwards.
  • Defend a rating. Describe a finding a director pushed back on and how the position was resolved on evidence.
  • Show regional judgement. Explain how you adapted an approach where local control maturity was weak.
  • Demonstrate coaching. A Senior is assessed on the quality of the team's papers, not only their own.
  • Ask about the plan's independence. Whether management can remove audits from the plan reveals the function's real standing.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Senior Internal Auditor do in Singapore?

They lead audits as in-charge: risk-based planning, supervising the fieldwork team, running meetings with senior process owners, and owning the issued report, findings and agreed management actions.

How much does a Senior Internal Auditor earn in Singapore?

Around S$7,000 to S$8,500 on first appointment, rising to roughly S$9,000 to S$11,000 with seven to nine years of experience. Banks, insurers and regional headquarters pay at the top of the range.

How long does it take to reach Internal Audit Manager?

Typically two to four years in the Senior seat. The deciding factors are whether you can own the annual plan and risk assessment, and whether you can carry the Audit Committee narrative without the current manager present.

Is a CIA necessary at Senior Internal Auditor level?

In Singapore it is close to expected for career internal auditors, particularly in financial institutions. CA (Singapore) or ACCA alone is accepted, but the CIA is what signals long-term commitment to the discipline.

What are the strongest exits from Senior Internal Auditor?

Internal Audit Manager is the direct route. Lateral exits into risk management, compliance, or controllership seats such as Assistant Finance Manager are all common, since control and process knowledge transfers directly.
